Current Health of a Resource

Available in HQ Open Source unless marked by * for HQ Enterprise only

This screen presents an overview of the resource's current health, as well as the current health of its related resources (for example, in the case of a group, other group members; in the case of a server, the hosting platform and the hosted services). The Current Health page is also a work area where users can analyze and compare the metrics of the resource and its related resources. Metric data is displayed in both numerical and graphical formats.

Tasks Available on This Screen

On this screen, most tasks are available through individual portlets, which are described below. Other tasks are available through the Tools Menu in the upper-right; the listed tasks depend on the resource type being viewed.

Sections on This Screen

Resources Tab

The tab has several portlets that display the resource's child ("hosted") resources and parent ("host") resources. The number and types of portlets depend on the resource type being viewed.

Portlet Name Portlet Description
Hosted Resources Displays a list of the resource's this resources hosts (child resources; as defined by HQ's resource hierarchy) and their availability. There may be more than one hosted-resources portlet displayed for given resource, depending on the type of the resource displayed. The title of the portlet will reflect how the child resources are categorized.
  • Platforms display two portlets: Platform Services (the services the platform directly hosts) and Deployed Servers (the servers the platform hosts).
  • Servers and Applications display two portlets: Deployed Services (the internal services the server/application hosts) and Internal Services (the deployed services the server/application hosts).
  • Services, Autogroups, and Groups have no hosted resources.
Each resource in the list is displayed with their name (or type, in the case of an autogroup, where more than one resource of that type exists).
  Hovering over the icon displays:
  • The hosted resource's type
  • The last known usage-metric value for the hosted resource
  • Breakdown of availability (meaningful for autogroups only)
Host Resources Displays the resources that host the current resource. Each resource is displayed with its current availability. Which host resources are displayed is determined by the type of resource being viewed:
  • Servers and Platform Services display their host platforms.
  • Services display their host servers.
  • Applications display the servers that are host servers of the services included in the application.
  • Groups and Autogroups display the host resources of the group members, unless the group consisting of platforms.
The title of the portlet will specify the relationship described above.
  Hovering over the icon displays:
  • The host resource's type
  • The last known usage-metric value for the host resource
Group Members Appears only when viewing a group or auto group. Lists the member resources of this group, along with each resource's current availability. The data displayed in the Problem Metrics portlet and the Indicators charts on this screen will include the data from a given member resource only if has been checked. Hovering over the icon displays:
  • The member resource's type
  • The last known usage-metric value for the member resource
  • A link to the member resource
Problem Metrics Lists the out-of-bound metrics for the selected resources. By default, it displays only the problem metrics of the resource being viewed, but other resources listed in the portlets can be selected for display here, too. If the selected resources have no problem metrics, the portlet will be empty. For each metric, the portlet displays two counts: the number of the selected resources that have "OOB" values for the metric, and the number of "Alerts" that the metric value has triggered. Hovering over the icon displays:
  • Resource Type: the resource type of the metric. This value will reflect the varying resource types when other resources have been selected above. If the resource type represents more than one resource in the hierarchy, then this item will also display, in parentheses, the number of resources that have the same problem metric.
  • Chart Metric in Indicators: Click this option to display charts of these indicator metrics in the tab.
  • View Full Chart: Click this option to view the full metric chart in the "Chart" screen.
  • Metric Data: Click this option to display a pop-up that contains the meta data information on this metric and its data.
To change to the "All Metrics" portlet:
  • Select "All Metrics" in the drop-down.
All Metrics Lists all (not just problem) metrics for the selected resources. Works just like the Problem Metrics portlet does.
To change to the "Problem Metrics" portlet:
    • Select "Problem Metrics" in the drop-down.

Indicators Tab

The tab on the Current Health page provides a visual workspace for users to analyze and compare metrics in-depth to gain insight into the current health of the resource(s). All data in this tab is divided into "slices" of time (the exact value of a slice is displayed in the timeline bar at the bottom of the screen when moused over) that match up vertically.

Availability

Near the top of the tab is the availability history of the resource.

The availability values span the metric display range. The average availability over this range is displayed to the right of the bar. Each availability light reflects the average availability over the time slice represented. Clicking an availability light displays the time range for that slice of the chart and positions a vertical highlight bar that highlights all of the metrics in the indicator charts for that slice of time.

Indicator Charts and Views

Indicator charts graph only those metrics indicated as indicator metrics for the resource or, optionally, metrics selected from the "Problem Metrics" or "All Metrics" portlets in the tab. The indicator are displayed as column charts: the area of each column indicates the value range (the high and low values) of the metric. The average value of the metric is indicated by the cross in the column. The charts are stacked vertically so that their X-axis (time) values line up. This works in conjunction with the vertical highlight from the availability and timeline bars to analyze the metric data across multiple metrics for a specific time. This is especially useful when trying to diagnose a problem at a specific time by correlating the important metrics and their metric values. Arrangements of charts for selected metrics can be saved as a "view" so that users can easily always compare the same metric data and therefore understand the interaction between different resources.

To view a full-page chart:

  • Click the chart name.
    The "Chart" screen will appear.

To change the chart views:

  • To change the display order of the charts, click and at the upper-right-hand corner of each chart.
  • To remove a chart from display, click at the upper-right-hand corner of the chart.
  • To save the set of displayed charts and their order, either
    • Update the current view: Select "Update <current-view name>" in View and click .
    • Create a new view: Select "Create New View" in View, type a view name, and click .
  • To delete the current view: Select "Delete View" in View and click .
  • To display another view: Select "Go to View" in View and select one of the views.

Events and Logs Tracking

Between the indicator charts and the timeline is the Events and Logs Tracking display.

If one or more events have been recorded in a time slice, then a blue box appears along the display at the corresponding time, allowing the occurrence to be correlated to the indicator metrics charts above using the highlight bar. Clicking on any one of the blue boxes will bring up a box below the timeline with the detail(s) of the event(s) in the time slice. The default view displays all details, however, the display can be filtered by: Error, Warn, Info, Debug, HQ Alerts, and Control Actions.

Metric Display Range

This section displays the metric display range used in this, and all Monitoring, screens. Users can change the display range.

To change the metric display range:

  • On the tab, in Metric Display Range at screen bottom, either:
    • For a range counting back from the current time: Select a length of time and click .
    • For a date/time range:
      1. Click Advanced Settings.
      2. In the resulting dialogue, select either a length of time or a date/time range and click
The metric charts on the screen automatically refresh to reflect the new display range. This display range applies to the metric display across all resource-monitoring screens.

Navigating via the Masthead Menu

Main screens in Hyperic contain a masthead menu. Users can navigate to the following parts of HQ using this menu:

Dashboard Takes users to the Dashboard, the starting screen in HQ, which displays information about resource health, recent alerts, recently performed auto-discovery scan, and control actions
Browse Resources Takes users to the screen where they can locate and navigate through information about all managed resources
Alert Center Takes users to the Alert Center, where they can look at all alerts triggered across the system
Report Center * Takes users to the Report Center, where they can generate all reports available in HQ.
Administration Takes users (with "Administer Hyperic HQ Server Configuration" permissions) to the Administration screen, where they can manage the system-wide settings
Recent Resources Provides a drop-down list of resources that the user has recently viewed. Selecting one of those resources takes the user to the Current Health screen for the resource.
Help Opens screen-sensitive online help in a secondary window

The masthead also displays the two most recently triggered alerts. Users can click the alert's time to be taken to the alert detail.
