Edit Alert Condition Set

Available in HQ Open Source unless marked by * for HQ Enterprise only

This screen allows users to view, edit, and add new (multiple) conditions that will trigger the alert. Alerts can be triggered by metric values, changes to inventory property, the status of a control action being performed on a resource (if the resource supports control actions), and log-tracking data. Additionally, users can configure recovery alerts and can control how the alert behaves after it has been triggered (referred to as "alert filters").

Tasks Available on This Screen

On this screen, users can do the following tasks:

To edit an existing alert condition:

  1. Select the kind of condition that will be alerted on:
    • Metrics: Select the metric from the droplist.
      • To compare the metric value against an absolute value, select the comparison operator (>, < or =) from the first droplist. Type the absolute value (for percentages, use a decimal value less than 1) against which the metric value will be compared using the comparison operator.
      • To compare the metric value against a baseline *, select the comparison operator (>, < or =) from the second droplist. Type a percent value (up to 100) and select the baseline against which the metric value will be compared using the comparison operator.
      • To monitor the metric simply for a change in value, select value changes. The alert will be triggered if the value for the metric ever changes.
    • Inventory Property: Select the resource's property that HQ should monitor for a change. If a change is detected in results of an auto-discovery scan, the alert will be triggered. *
    • Control Action: * Select the control action and then the status to look for: In Progress, Completed, or Failed. (available only if the resource supports control actions)
    • Event/Logs Level: * Select a log level that, when HQ detects it in a resource's logs, will trigger the alert. (optional) Users can also type a substring that must match in the log string. (available only if the resource supports event and log tracking).
  2. Specify when and how often the alert will be triggered when the defined condition(s) is met in Enable Action(s):
    • "Each time the condition is met": (most common selection) This means "perform the specified notification immediately when the conditions for this alert have been met." More information
    • "When conditions are exceeded for x within a time period of y": * Knowledge of the metric's collection interval helps make this setting more useful. More information
    • "Once every X times conditions are exceeded within a time period of Y": * Exact knowledge of the metric's collection interval is necessary. More information
  3. Click .

To delete an existing alert condition: *

  • Click Delete This Condition under the specific condition and click .

To create a new alert condition: *

  1. Click Add Another Condition.
  2. Specify whether both the new condition and the preceding one must be satisfied for the alert to be triggered ("AND") or only one must be satisfed ("OR").
  3. Follow the instructions for editing a condition.

To assign this alert as a recovery alert for another alert definition: *

  1. Select the other alert definition in Recovery Alert and click .
Now when the "primary" alert is triggered, instead of receiving continual notification of the alert being triggered as the condition persists, users can receive only the notification that the opposite condition has occurred (that is, when this recovery alert is triggered). This setup requires that the alert is disabled after being triggered, as described just below. The primary alert must already be defined on this resource (or resource type) before a recovery alert can be assigned to it.

To prevent the alert from triggering repeatedly: *

  • Under "Enable Action Filters," select "Disable alert until marked fixed or by recovery alert" and click .
The alert will be triggered only once. After that, it must be reenabled manually or via a recovery alert, as described just above. More information.

To prevent the same control action, defined in related alerts, from being performed multiple times on the same resource: *

  • Under "Enable Action Filters," select "Disregard control actions that are defined for related alerts" and click .
This option is available only when the resource on which this alert is defined both supports control actions and is part of an application that has other resources with similar alert control actions. More information.

To consolidate notification for all alerts on resources in the same application: *

  • Under "Enable Action Filters," select "Filter notification actions that are defined for related alerts" and click .
This option is very useful for cutting down on the number of alerts from a single application. More information.
